Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)
Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site
Breast surgery · augmentation · body contouring
Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.
His breast practice is planned from measurement rather than from a size request. In an assessment for augmentation that means establishing breast base width, tissue pinch thickness, nipple position relative to the fold, skin quality and chest-wall symmetry, and then deciding whether the problem is volume, position, or both — because only the first of those is answered by augmentation alone.
Dr. Mao discusses device lifetime at the first appointment rather than the last. Implants are not lifetime devices, exchange at some point is likely, surveillance imaging is recommended for gel implants, and the capsule can contract. Patients who are told this early tend to make better decisions, including decisions not to operate, and he regards an assessment that ends in a recommendation against surgery as a consultation that worked.
Clinical focus
A device is a commitment
An implant is not a one-off purchase. It is a device that will most likely be exchanged at some point, that is followed with imaging while it is in place, and that can contract or rupture without warning. Patients who understand that before the first operation are the ones who are not surprised by the second.
